Best Photography Spots in Mallorca: Cala Llombards

After a few incredible beach days to start our trip to Mallorca, Spain, the next few days brought intense winds, grey clouds and heavy surf. The turquoise waters turned brown from the sediment. One evening, we were able to go for a bit of a swim, as the waves calmed down (slightly), however torn up seaweed squished between our toes every few steps. I’m not one to complain about a bit of rain on a vacation, as I know that’s par for the course, however, as a travel videographer and photographer, I started to get a bit nervous after the storm continued day after day. Would I be able to create some epic travel content on this trip? Or would we be stuck in our hotel dreaming of relaxing days on the beach instead?

Thankfully, after three relentless days of wild surf, the sea calmed, Mallorca’s famous turquoise waters returned and the sun covered the landscape once again. At this point, my fiance and I knew we had to take advantage of the weather by visiting one of the best photography spots in Mallorca: Cala Llombards.

Cala Llombards is a famous beach on the south east coast of Mallorca. The white/yellow sand beach is framed by large cliffs with green trees resting on top. Small houses with green doors and shutters are built into the sides of the cliffs, with some of them built right up against the sea. Each day during the warmer months, hundreds of locals and tourists flock to Cala Llombards to swim in the Cala’s pristine waters, which start out as a cool turquoise colour in the shallows, and transition into a deep royal blue as you move further away from shore. For a travel videographer and photographer, the incredible mixture of a rocky landscape, European architecture and vivid waters is a must see.

Things to Know About Cala Llombards

When visiting Cala Llombards, know that it gets busy. And I mean very busy. As one of Mallorca’s most beautiful beaches, both tourists and locals flock to this beach throughout the warmer months. This means that, if you’re driving, you’re going to want to arrive early to get a parking spot in the lot.

If you arrive too late, you may need to park on one of the roads leading into the beach. We saw a number of people doing this when we were there, however the road down to the beach is steep and windy, so the jaunt down may be a bit tiring.

As with any day trip, it’s always advisable to bring some water and snacks. Cala Llombards does, however, have a small restaurant right on the beach so that you can grab a burger and a beer while you lounge in the sand. And, if you prefer to keep the sand out of your food while you chow down, they also have a patio with tables and chairs.

The view from the beach is fairly epic, however the really nice spots at this beach for photography are actually located along pathways beneath both cliffs.

If you are facing the water from the beach, the first pathway you can take is along the left cliff (with the water to the right). You can see a number of people standing on this pathway in the photo above. The first portion of the path leads you up some fairly gentle natural stairs, and then along a more solid path near the aforementioned houses built into the cliff. Once you reach the end of the cliffs, you’ll essentially be able to relax right near some of those cool looking retro houses. If you’ve seen any of the photos of people posing in front of green doors along the water in Mallorca on Instagram, well, this is one of the spots.

Similarly, if you follow the path along the cliffs to the right of the beach, you will find a large rocky outcrop along the water that is popular for relaxing and cliff jumping into the pristine royal blue waters. This is also a great spot for snapping some epic GoPro footage jumping in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, this side of the beach provides a perfect view of arguably Cala Llombard’s best view, which is the opposing cliff wall with the houses built into the side of it (refer to the first photo in this article).

There are also a few metal ladders on this side of the beach that will help you get in and out of the water after an epic cliff jump or just a leisurely swim. I would recommend bringing an extra towel if you can, however, as the sitting area along the pathway is essentially just a very rocky surface. An extra towel will provide a bit of additional comfort while you’re lounging, especially if you plan on hanging out at Cala Llombards for the day.

Conclusion

Though our trip had a few stormy days that made the regularly beautiful beaches look like a blender, Mallorca in Spain is filled with incredible landscapes and views, making it a paradise for travel photographers and videographers. One of the best photography spots in Mallorca, Cala Llombards, offers, in my opinion, the very best of what Mallorca has to offer for both photography and relaxation. Cala Llombard’s rich blue waters, tall cliffs and retro European architecture provide an incredible synergy that makes for an interesting backdrop for travel photography, while the beach’s amenities make it an easy place to visit for the day.
